Canyoning (or canyoneering) is one of the most incredible ways to explore the wild side of nature — rappelling down waterfalls, wading through pools, and strolling across riverbeds in pristine rainforest. But if you’ve never done it before, you might be wondering: Is canyoning safe?
In this post, we’ll walk you through the safety basics so you can step into your first canyoning adventure with confidence.
The Short Answer: Yes, With the Right Guides and Gear
Like any outdoor adventure, canyoning comes with some risk—but when done with professional guides, well-maintained gear, and proper safety protocols, it’s an incredibly safe and rewarding experience. In fact, by the end of the tour most people say it’s less intimidating than
What Makes Canyoning Safe?
1. Trained Guides:
Look for well-trained guides – which I know sounds basic, but you do have to keep your eyes peeled. Ensuring that they have taken local tour guide training and maintain their skills with regular reviews of coursework.
2. High-Quality Gear:
From specially designed harnesses to helmets, ropes, and canyoning-specific shoes, reliable gear is non-negotiable. We inspect all equipment daily, and only use gear suited for the wet, high-friction canyon environment.
3. Detailed Safety Information:
Before you set foot in the water, we give you a full rundown of what to expect, how to rappel, where to place your feet, and how to communicate as a group, which will give you a greater sense of what to expect and what you’ll be hearing from us as you work on your technique.
4. Customized Routes:
We’ve chosen our route based on the “average” adventurer. That means there’s nothing too extreme here on the tour, and while it might test you a little, it won’t leave you wrecked.
What If I’m Afraid of Heights?
You’re not alone. Many people are a little nervous at the start—but they’re usually smiling ear-to-ear by the end. We take time to coach you through each section and we’re able to provide the support you need to get you through the tour successfully. If you’re deathly afraid of heights, well – maybe not the best pick for you, but other than that – it’s a challenge we know you can overcome 🙂
Why Canyoning in Costa Rica Is Great for Beginners
Costa Rica is full of lush canyons that are ideal for first-timers. The warm weather, abundant waterfalls, and relatively short hikes make it a great place to try canyoning for the first time. In total, we cover about 3kms in the full tour route.
At our canyon in the Osa region of Costa Rica, we combine epic rappels, hiking through the waterways, and swimming in natural pools (and an optional jump) to give you a taste of everything in a low-pressure, fun environment.
When done right, canyoning is one of the most unforgettable and empowering adventures you can have. And yes — it’s absolutely safe, even for beginners, when you go with the right team.
