Costa Rica tours not ziplining

Ziplining is definitely the first thing that comes to mind when people think of Costa Rican adventures — but it’s not the only option. Now, we’re not saying ziplining isn’t a great thing to do (in fact, we love it – especially with Osa Canopy Tours) BUT, if you’re craving something more immersive, more hands-on, and just a little off the beaten path, we’ve got you covered.

Here are five incredible adventure experiences in Costa Rica that don’t involve ziplining — starting with our personal favourite 😉 (we never said we were impartial!)

1. Canyoning: Rappel Waterfalls in the Heart of the Jungle (Osa Region)

With US! Canyoning (also called canyoneering) takes you deep into rainforest canyons where you’ll hike, swim, and rappel down waterfalls — yes, actual waterfalls. It’s equal parts adrenaline and peaceful nature immersion.

At Osa Canyoning Adventures, you’ll experience a series of stunning waterfall descents, hiking in the rainforest, natural pools and for course a mid-tour picnic. It’s a full-body, full-senses experience, and unlike anything you’ve tried before. (reserve here)

2. Whitewater Rafting on the Pacuare River (Limon Region)

The Pacuare River is legendary for its Class III-IV rapids and lush jungle views. You’ll navigate rapids, float through narrow canyons, and spot wildlife like toucans and sloths along the way.

For travellers who want a rush and the rainforest, this is a must-do.

3. Tubing down the Rio Negro at Hacienda Guachipelin (Guanacaste Region)

The experience involves floating down a 5-kilometer (3-mile) stretch of the river, navigating Class II and III rapids, and is an absolute ball. It’s not an adrenaline rush really – it’s more LOADS of fun. Be ready for cold water, but it’s worth it.

4. Caving in Barra Honda National Park (Nicoya Region)

Prefer your adventure underground? Head to Barra Honda for a guided caving tour. This national park is home to a network of limestone caves filled with stalactites, bats, and underground chambers you’ll rappel into and climb out of. It’s a hidden gem most tourists never even hear about.

5. Rockclimbing in Cachí (San Jose Region)

A popular sport climbing destination known for its unique basalt wall and diverse range of routes. The area offers a variety of climbs for different skill levels, with routes generally increasing in difficulty from right to left, and available all year-round due to it’s undercut slope keeping it dry all year-round even through the rainy season.

There’s something for you to explore in all regions of Costa Rica. We hope you’ll come down to the Osa region and get into the canyon with us, but even if you don’t this time, keep your eyes on the rest of these options.
