Costa Rica is a dream destination for outdoor adventures, and canyoning is one of the most amazing ways to experience its slightly-wilder side. But when is the best time to go canyoning here?

Let’s break it down by season, so you know exactly what to expect — whether you’re planning your trip for the dry months or the heart of the rainy season.

Dry Season (December to April): Best for First-Timers

The dry season is Costa Rica’s peak tourist period, and for good reason: it’s sunny, warm, and reliable. This is a great time for first-timers or families who want more predictable conditions and less adrenaline.

Why?

  • Clear skies and warm weather
  • Easy access to canyons, with rivers being more reliably crossable
  • Less mud on the entrance trail so less slippage
  • Ideal water flow for beginner rappels, without needing to battle water strength and challenging visibility.

The only thing is, the waterfalls get much smaller in late dry season. It’s still gorgeous, but it’s not as water-abundant.

Shoulder Season (May to August): For the More Adventurous

Now this period of the year is an absolute blast. It’s best for those who have some experience with canyoning, and anyone else looking for an extra bit of a challenge.

Why?

  • More water – making the waterfalls more spectacular and a little more challenging
  • Everything is a bit slipperier – so a bit of a scramble is usually included in tours during the shoulder season

Rainy Season (September to November): For the Most Adventurous

This is when Costa Rica’s jungle really comes alive. Rivers swell, waterfalls roar, and everything turns an electric shade of green.

Why?

  • Firstly, it’s a bit less predictable, with the occasional delay or date-switch needed
  • The volume of water can be WILD – challenging all your senses and the balance and strength in your legs
  • Mud everywhere – which I know doesn’t sound appealing to everyone…but to some of you it does!

Now, having said all that – there are days where we cancel tours in the rainy season due to the conditions. But if we make our inspections and decide it’s ON, expect some epic adventures.

Essentially, we run tours year-round and tailor each one based on the conditions that day. Whether you come in the heart of dry season or deep in the rainy months, we’ll make sure it’s safe, unforgettable, and wildly fun.
