Top 5 Canyoning tips

canyoning tips

Here’s our list of the top 5 canyoning tips to remember when you come on a tour with us (and with others):

  1. Let the guides manipulate all the gear – it’s important that the guides do all the connecting and disconnecting of your gear from the ropes. Even if you’ve done some canyoning or rappelling or rock climbing before, please allow us to take care of your gear. It’s just easier for us to guarantee your safety that way, and it gives us peace of mind.
  2. Footwear is key – you might think that hiking shoes are the best, but not always. If you’ve already tested your footwear in water and on wet rocks and the hiking boots have come out as the best, go for it – but a lot of hiking shoes have a really stiff tread on the sole of the shoe and this doesn’t serve you well for walking over wet and uneven rocks. It’s the more flexible tread that helps you get the best grip on wet rocks.
  3. Bring a water bottle – even though we’ll be in water for most of the tour, it’s best to bring a water bottle with you that can clip into your gear. As we walk through the water we do kick-up a little bit of dirt so it’s not the best idea to drink from the waterway directly.
  4. Your speed is under your control – your speed of descent is up to you on the tour. We’ll show you the technique at the start, but just know that you’re adding and taking away the braking force as you like. This means you’ve got the control of how fast you head down the waterfalls. Of course, we’re your back-up and can add braking force at any moment when needed.
  5. Keep nature in mind with every step – please be conscious that we’re disturbing nature by coming on this tour, and so we try to keep that disruption to a minimum. It’s ideal when we can find a balance between the raw natural experience and conservation to arrive at the point of eco-tourism. With that said, it’s important that we don’t bring things into the tour that aren’t needed (like sunscreen and repellants). You’ll be under the shade of the canopy the whole time, and the bugs are not bad at all, so we kindly request that you don’t apply either since they’ll be leeched into the waterways if you’ve got them on.

With these 5 things in mind, you’re setting yourself up for an exciting yet safe experience in nature that’s also keeping your impact to a minimum.
