rappelling vs canyoningYou’re probably the adventurous-type, to have landed here…right? Only those who like themselves some outdoor adventures end up here trying to understand the difference between rappelling and canyoning. You might come across them being used interchangeably, which is pretty normal, but there are some actual differences between them.

Rappelling: Descending

Rappelling, you might also know as abseiling, is an adventure that focuses on descending down vertical surfaces, such as cliffs, waterfalls, or rock faces. It’s the act of going down the incline – usually accompanied by a nice adrenaline rush. Oftentimes too, a rappelling adventure will include the possibility to do the same rappel various times.

Canyoning usually includes some rappelling – but it’s not just that. It is an adventure through canyons – often requiring some hiking, sometimes swimming, sometimes jumping, scrambling and climbing. It’s a bit more all-encompassing and ends up being really quite the immersive experience in nature’s playground, from a starting point that’s different to the finishing point (instead of repeating elements). It usually combines the thrill of rappelling with the spirit of exploration and varied terrain.

The main thing to know is that if you’re looking for a rappelling adventure specifically, just make sure that whatever tour you’re booking explicitly says that rappelling is part of their tour, because there are some canyoning tours but don’t have any rappelling involved.

With us, on our canyoning tour you’ll get 8 different rappels, a few kilometres of hiking, swimming in natural pools, a few optional jumps and some gentle climbing. Ready to scratch that adventurous itch? Book your spot over here.
