If you’re planning a family trip to Costa Rica and looking for something more adventurous than your average nature walk, you might be wondering: Can kids go canyoning?
The answer is yes — when it’s done right.
We’ve been offering family-friendly canyoning experiences since we opened in 2023 – we take kids as young as 6 years old on the tour.
Now, has every kid loved coming on the tour? No. But the vast majority have! And there’s a few things you can do to make sure your young-ones will love it too:
- Only bring us the outdoorsy kids please 😉 If your children prefer to stay inside in the air conditioning and play on their phones, they’re probably not going to love 5 immersive hours in nature.
- The kids that have the best time on the tour are also the ones who are active – they don’t even notice the time flying by. The ones that do count the time, are the ones who aren’t used to running around and being active. So if your kids are active, they should be totally fine.
- Just like everyone else too – make sure they know what they’re in for. It’s only happened once, but when the kids don’t know what to expect from the tour, they get tired sooner. This post describes the tour in detail, so that might help the process.
As a quick list, the tour involves hiking, rappelling, swimming, and scrambling through river canyons. It sounds intense, but with the right preparation, it’s incredibly safe and fun for children.
There are also some extra things that kids often get out of tours like this:
- Confidence boost: Just like the rest of us, kids love the feeling of accomplishment after rappelling their first waterfall.
- Unplugged adventure: No screens, no distractions—just nature and movement, which is a rare opportunity these days.
- Educational moments: We sneak in lessons about plants & wildlife along the way.
- Pure fun: Sliding down rocks, splashing through pools, and getting muddy without getting in trouble? It’s like everything they’ve always wanted.
Canyoning here in Costa Rica is one of the most unique experiences your family can share – without leaving the kids at home. It’ll be one of those core memories for them as they continue to grow.
One extra thing to know – a lot of people ask about a kids rate for the tour. Kids do often tend to require a bit more from us and the guides, or at least the same as the adults – so that’s why we have just one price for all. We have however, competitively priced our tour so it’s likely to come out more economical than other tours anyway, even paying the same rate for the young ones.
